Ernest Gimson (1864-1919) with Sidney Barnsley (1865-1926), circa 1890, an early and important oak 'Wishbone' refectory dining table, the rectangular top above plank legs with shaped apron, chamfered details and exposed tenons throughout
202cm wide, 95.5cm deep, 73.5cm high
Footnote:A similar but double-sized wishbone table of the same design was sold in 2007 for £67,000 + Fees (Wooley & Wallis, Arts and Crafts - 01 Jun 2007, Lot 930).
Literature: Lambourne (Lionel), Utopian Craftsmen, London: Astragal Books, a single wishbone table illustrated, pl. 223 p. 185.
Gimson and the Barnsley brothers moved to the rural region of the Cotswolds in 1893 "to live near to nature". They soon settled at Pinbury Park under the patronage of the Bathurst family. It was during these early years that the table was made before the workshops at Sapperton were established. In these early days of manufacturing before establishing the Sapperton workshops, Ernest Gimson focussed on turned chair making, plasterwork and design of architecture and furniture. Ernest Barnsley conversely worked on architectural projects and furniture design, whereas Sidney Barnsley was focused on furniture making, particularly oak tables such as the large table at Stoneywell Cottage and those made for the Bute family. According to contemporary information, Barnsley had a block and pulley system set up from the ceiling beams of the Pinbury Park workshop so he could make these without assistance.
