: Johanna Birkenruth was an early and eminent member of the Guild of Women Binders. She produced jewelled bindings which possibly inspired Sangorski and Sutcliffe to follow suit. She offered classes in bookbinding in South Kensington, and some of her bindings were exhibited in Chicago in 1893
