Relined. The picture surface is stable, with good canvas tension. There is fine craquelure throughout. A vertical mark is present to the lower right quadrant of the painting, as photographed, as well as some smaller areas of abrasion and accretion scattered across the canvas. Paint and varnish layers are generally in good condition, especially around the depicted subject of the painting, although there are also some more matt, protruding and potentially bituminous areas to the lower half of the canvas. There are some small areas of overpaint visible under UV, there is a vertical line lower left, a few areas around face and neck and one or two to background areas.
