Vietnam War Sketch

signed indistinctly lower right
watercolour and gouache
30.2cm x 44cm
Footnote:Pham Thanh Tam (1932-2019) was a Vietnamese war artist and journalist. Tam was active in the First Indochina War as an independence fighter in the Viet Minh coalition. He subsequently saw combat in the second Vietnam War, where he fought against the American and South Vietnamese armies. Tam’s impressionistic artworks – rarely seen at auction – capture the realities of war and also provide more intimate snapshots of daily life.
In later life, Tam continued to create artworks that took the events of the war as their main subject matter. His diary entries and sketches were collected in Drawing Under Fire: War Diary of a Young Vietnamese Artist, published in 2005.
Although Tam’s work is new to the market, the auction world has recently seen a surge of interest in twentieth-century Vietnamese artists more widely, with works by To Van Ngoc, Gia Tri Nguyen and Le Pho regularly achieving five figure sums at salerooms in the Far East and beyond.
