Leslie Hurry (1909-1978)/Costume Design for Hamlet/for the production directed by Peter Wood with Ian Bannen (1928-1999) as Hamlet in 1961/watercolour, 56cm x 26cm/Note: Leslie Hurry began his life as a painter whose depression led to his work reflecting the Surrealist movement and to Robert Helpmann's commission to design his ballet Hamlet in 1941. This landmark production led to a thirty-five year long career as a major theatre designer which included the famous Sadler's Wells Ballet's production of Swan Lake. In 1960 Hurry became a Royal Shakespeare Company associate designer/Provenance: Purchased at a major retrospective of Hurry's work at the National Theatre, 1979
