Shaw was allegedly the daughter of a respectable farmer near Tewkesbury, The 'Tragic Verses' appended to the broadside are a version of the 'The female rambling sailor'. ... the flattering tongue of a sea Captain, of the name of Mr. Samuel Gray,
"who filled her mind with the most solemn promises of marriage, which the foolish girl believed until they appointed a meeting place, which they frequented for a short space of time, when poor Susan would urge him to fulfil his promises he had made to her, which he proposed to fulfil after he had made a trip to North America ... when she found she was pregnant!... he was immediately apprehended and fully committed, to take his trial at next Gloucester Assizes."
