[Qur’an] A Complete Qur’an, Qajar Persia, AH 1230 (1814–1815)

Persian manuscript on polished paper, small 8vo/12mo, complete, written in black ink in naskh by an unidentified scribe, surah headings in red, with occasional marginal annotations, the opening pages simply illuminated and decorated, without illustrations; apparently later endpapers, lacquered paper bindings laid onto 19th century morocco rebinding, gilt tooled to borders and spine, all edges gilt, the covers painted with floral ornament and Qur’anic verses, the spine restored at a later date. Some light marking to the opening leaves, otherwise in good condition.

Provenance:

Sir Charles William Rouse Boughton (1747-1821)

Footnote:

The text is written in a relatively modest naskh hand on polished Persian paper, with the surah headings picked out in red and restrained illumination to the opening pages. A number of marginal annotations appear throughout the volume. The original lacquer binding forms the principal decorative feature of the manuscript, its covers painted with floral ornament and Qur’anic inscriptions.
