A suite of Regency rosewood and brass inlaid furniture in the manner of George Oakley, comprising a pair of inlaid card tables, the fold-over tops with canted corners enclosing baize lined playing surfaces, the swivel action revealing a compartment, on lyre shaped supports to a platform with four leaf-capped scroll legs on castors, 91.5cm wide x 75cm high and a sofa table, the rectangular top with canted flaps above two frieze drawers on a lyre shaped support to a platform with four leaf-capped scroll legs on castors, 150.5cm wide extended, 69cm deep, 71cm high

Provenance:

By descent from Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson (1853-1937), English actor and theatrical impresario. He was considered by George Bernard Shaw and other critics to have been the finest Hamlet of his generation and is widely regarded as the greatest Shakespearian actor of the era. He was the second actor to be knighted, a few years after the first, his friend Sir Henry Irving. The furniture offered in this sale formed part of the furnishings at his home, 22 Bedford Square WC1
