A French silver-gilt and agate desk seal

A French silver-gilt and agate desk seal, 19th Century, modelled as a nobleman standing with an artist's palette at his feet, banded agate plinth with carnelian seal matrix carved with an armorial, 7cm high

Quarterly arms, with:

1. ROUSE (two bars indented)
2. BOUGHTON (chevron between trefoils)
3. BOUGHTON (3 crescents)
4. ROUSE (as 1st quarter)

Dexter crest (man’s head) for ROUSE

Sinister crest (stork’s head) for BOUGHTON

Motto: Omne bonum Dei donum

These are the arms of Rouse-Boughton, but without a baronet’s badge. It is assumed therefore that this must have been made for William Edward Rouse-Boughton (1788-1856), only son and heir of Sir Charles William Rouse-Boughton, who on his father’s death in 1821 succeeded as 10th Baronet of Lawford Hall and 2nd Baronet of Downton Castle.
