[Criminal Broadside, Murder] The Tewksbury [Tewkesbury] Tragedy, Giving an account how Susannah Shaw was Murdered, by a Naval Officer of the name of Mr [Samuel] Gray, who cruely sedued [sic] her under the promise of Marriage, and stabbed her to the heart with a knife & buried her under a Tree in the wood near Tewksbury, Birmingham, Wm. Wright. Printer, 99, Licfield-Street, [circa 1810-1820], silked, woodcut of a man digging a grave with a pick-axe, a dead body lying beside the grave, 'Tragic Verses' below, 37.5cm x 24.5cm
Footnote:We have not been able to establish an execution date of Mr Gray in our research. Shaw was allegedly the daughter of a respectable farmer near Tewkesbury, The 'Tragic Verses' appended to the broadside are a version of the 'The female rambling sailor'. ... the flattering tongue of a sea Captain, of the name of Mr. Samuel Gray,
"who filled her mind with the most solemn promises of marriage, which the foolish girl believed until they appointed a meeting place, which they frequented for a short space of time, when poor Susan would urge him to fulfill hisd promises he had made to her, which he proposed to fulfill after he had made a trip to North America ... when she found she was pregant!... he was immediately apprehended and fully committed, to take his trial at next Gloucester Assizes."

To be able to bid at a Chorley’s auction, you must register and obtain a paddle number from our saleroom office. If you have not bid with us before, you will be asked to provide proof of identity and residence, such as driver's licence photocard, passport or current utility bill.
If you are unable to attend the auction to bid in person, you can leave a commission bid, request a telephone bid or register for online bidding.
