London Calling | Fine Art & Antiques Auction 19 & 20 July 2022

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” declared Samuel Johnson, but we can’t imagine ever getting tired of the views of the capital being offered for sale in our July auction.
The artist Leonard Russell Squirrell (1893-1979) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under the tutelage of Philip Wilson Steer before a successful career in painting and etching, with commissions including a series of views for railway advertisements and carriage prints. Of almost photographic quality, these four stunning watercolours painted in 1957 include two 2-metre wide panoramic views from the south bank of the Thames, one of St Paul’s Cathedral, the other the Palace of Westminster, each estimated to fetch £1,000-1,500 (Lots 875 and 877), as well as a striking view of the Tower of London with union flag flying, estimate £2,000-3,000 (Lot 876) and Tower Bridge and the Pool of London, estimate £1,200-1,500 (Lot 878).
